What is the "Outpost?"
A unique entity in northern New Jersey, the Outpost is
an organization that offers opportunities to serve others through
its community service programs as well as a place to enjoy live
music on Friday nights during Fall, Winter and Spring.
Mission Statement
The Outpost in the Burbs is a nonprofit community outreach
organization, dedicated to enriching individual and community
life through programs which foster and celebrate creativity,
spirituality, and social unity.
A Brief History
In the Spring of 1987, a group of young adults, meeting
Sunday nights in the library of the First Congregational Church
of Montclair, decided to open a coffeehouse as a means of drawing
others into their group. The name Outpost was selected
because it suggests a place that offers hospitality to those
exploring the frontiers in their own lives and in our society.
For more than a decade, the Outpost has been a place where
people have enjoyed great folk music, found new friends and been
exposed to personal growth opportunities trough volunteerism
and community service. The Outpost currently offers its supporters
a newsletter and website that detail both the concert schedule
and the activities calendar (a mix of volunteer opportunities
in the area and community-building activities such as hiking,
touring, etc.). As a performance venue, the Outpost has received
regional attention for its internationally-known artists.
In order to expand the scope of its mission, the Outpost
broke its formal legal ties with the First Congregational Church,
Montclair in the spring of 2001, becoming
a nonprofit corporation under Paragraph 501(c)(3) of the Internal
Revenue Code.
Funding
The Outpost receives all of its income from sales of concert
tickets and promotional items and individual, foundation and
corporate donations.
Organizational Structure
A Board of Trustees (Board) governs the Outpost.
It consists of the executive committee: President, Vice President,
Treasurer and Secretary. Other Board members act as chair and
provide leadership for one of the active committees: Administration;
Finance; Hospitality and Volunteer Development; Program; and
Promotion and Marketing. There is also an Executive Committee
consisting of the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer,
and two other Trustees, appointed by a two-thirds vote of the
Board. Finally, there is a Nominating Committee, appointed by
the President and comprised of at least one Trustee.
What is the "Outpost?" The Outpost is about music,
social action, and activities, but mostly it's about people.
You can be a part of something great by volunteering
to make a difference.
