DIRECTIONS TO OUTPOST IN THE BURBS

Early Winter 2004 – 2005

FRIDAY, December 17, 2004
The Holiday Show
Melissa Ferrick
with special guests We're About 9

Put her on a stage, and watch how within minutes Melissa Ferrick earns a fresh new batch of hardcore fans. She does it simply by being herself: fierce and funny, outspoken and vulnerable, passionate and playful. Of course it doesn’t hurt that she’s a masterful guitarist with a dynamite voice and a catalog of irresistible songs. Ferrick started attracting widespread attention back in her teen years in Ipswich, Massachusetts. By age 20 she was signed to Atlantic Records where she released her first two records, Massive Blur and Willing to Wait. Her next three recordings were put out by the indie What Are Records, and then, in 2000, Melissa launched her own label: Right On Records. So far, Right On has released three studio albums, including The Other Side and a double-live set. Twelve years of classical training, starting with her elementary Suzuki lessons and capped by two years each at Berklee College of Music and at New England Conservatory of Music, provided her with ample background in music theory. But it wasn’t until she picked up a guitar that she truly found her own voice. “I feel like we found each other,” Melissa says of her favorite instrument. “I’m constantly discovering ways I can make sounds come out of it; ways I can make an acoustic guitar not sound like an acoustic guitar.” Melissa takes command of her surroundings and beckons her growing community of listeners to hear where shel’ll take them next. The trio We're About 9 open the show.
$22 DOS / $20 ADV

The Outpost will once again help bring good cheer to needy children in the community by supporting the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots Program. If you’re coming to the December 17 Melissa Ferrick concert, please bring a new, unwrapped toy for a boy or a girl. A uniformed Marine will be there to receive your gift, which will be delivered to a special child on Christmas Day. (If you can’t make the concert and still would like to participate, there will be a collection box in our office until the concert date. Please call ahead.) You’ll make someone else’s holidays a little brighter and be surprised by the lift it gives you.

Outpost audiences have a unique added opportunity to hear their favorite artists on the airwaves prior to Outpost performances. WFUV, WFDU and WNTI, WGHT and WDHA have been supportive of touring artists through the area, by interview on their free form formats and by coming down to the Outpost to emcee some of the concerts. Our appreciation to these stations is immense and ongoing. So check out these stations not only when Outpost artists are highlighted....but as part of your musical meanderings!
